The Dead People Store

Okay so technically it’s a used furniture store but I’ve been told by a couple people that it’s referred to as “the dead people store”. It is a place where items are sold that family either doesn’t want, need or care to keep for whatever various reasons. The furniture in the store (some may consider it a warehouse) is on the older side which for me simply gives it character. They’ve got some "vintage pieces" and I guess newer if you consider the earlier 80’s “newer”.

I was taken to this store within days of moving to Germany but at the time was much more concerned about getting our own furniture, painting and settling us in to our new housing in a rather familiar way. Going back crossed my mind a few times but not enough to actually drive there and check it out again. I guess I didn’t think anyone else would be all that interested and going by myself just isn’t nearly as fun.

Jamaya has been looking for this store since a neighbor of hers mentioned getting a large German shrunk there for a very good price. “Okay that sounds good (rolling my eyes because when I went there so long ago I was not impressed but still slightly interested because it would get me out of the house). I know where it is so we should go” I've said too many times to remember. Oh and do I even need to mention that we have more furniture in our little apartment than Ive seen in any so far. I am unconciously trying to win the "most crap in one small space" award...

The other day while out and about I figured hey, since we are right next to the dang place why not check it out. OMG, seriously?! I can’t believe I blew this place off. It is really neat. The prices are beyond reasonable. Items that would have cost you 5 grand new are only 2–4 hundred used. It is spectacular and I now have a large list of items I must, this is the “I can think of nothing other than them” kind of must, go back for. I have been going crazy for days thinking of where I can put these pieces, how I will convince J it’s a good investment and how I can buy all of them. It has been consuming my thoughts people.

There are two green marble top tables that I really like. This is the one that J said he preferred. He said it was sturdier. I’m not to sure either way.

This is the base of the one I prefer.

And this is the top. It is a darker emerald green. I think I might like the other a tad bit more the longer I look at them. Or maybe it’s just because I know I can still convince J of that one.

Today we drove by so that I could try and convince J buying more furniture was something we needed to do. Storage is a good thing and something we are lacking. Isn’t everyone? J seemed right on board as soon as we started walking around and it wasn’t long before we were running between this piece and that piece trying to narrow down our selection to a mere 4, then 3, then 2 and now 1. It was hard people, very hard. We argue and debate about every detail. Every. Last. One. Its nerve racking. Hell I think it was even nerve racking for Jamaya who was following us around so patiently. She rocks, she really does. I had no idea we were debating back and forth for over an hour. Crazy I tell you.

This is the one we chose to go with. I like it, I like it a lot. I was not 100% when we left the store but the more I look at it the more I think it is me. I’m still not sure how I feel about putting a TV on one side which is why other options are being discussed. What do you all think about hanging a TV on the wall? Above this (it would pretty much be an extension off of our computer desk/book shelf. Later being put in an office. I can dream, right?)…

This might have been #2 because I was in love with all the storage it had. J was not keen on the display area or the crown molding at the base of the display shelf. It did have a beautiful fold down bar.

This is #3, I was drawn to this piece for multiple reason. The size was smaller than the others but it still had lots of storage and display options. It looked older which I liked and has a beautiful fold down bar (almost exactly like #2 with a globe photo on the mirror). I really liked this piece but J was not on board.

This was option #4. It was beautiful but had a few issues for both of us. A piece of the molding at the base was missing on the bottom left side and the doors where we are debating on putting the TV (a temporary thing) had some discoloration (maybe from storage away from the unit).

Either way we have it decided and I am totally on board. I love the chosen item and can’t wait for it to be sitting in our living room. I have plans, so many plans. The dining room is going to be clutter free and the house will be more organized. I am so tired of clutter! Sure we are confirming the statement “we will never be able to do another DITY move again” but I’m okay with that. Who likes packing and moving heavy stuff by themselves anyway? Bring on the stinky, smoking like a chimney packers. I can handle it.

This is a cute and rather old bar. I love the look of this piece although the inside confuses me but I didn’t really look at that very close.

The inside of the bar. It seems to have an ice box on one side and some glass containers of some sort in the middle. I don’t know what is on the other side. Jamaya and J liked this piece; Jamaya is going back tomorrow to reserve it.
